The Denver Broncos have a superstar in the making in Courtland Sutton.

We’re over a week away from the start of NFL training camp, and few teams have more hype surrounding them than the Denver Broncos. Their offseason was among the best in the entire league and on paper, look like the biggest threat to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West.

Even though quarterback Drew Lock is being anointed as the next great quarterback in the making, he’s not going to become a household name for the Broncos in 2020. That distinction belongs to wide receiver Courtland Sutton.

Courtland Sutton will greatly benefit in this Broncos offense

Sutton made a name for himself during his final two years at SMU, where he recorded over 1,000 receiving yards in each campaign. Entering the NFL Draft process in 2018, Sutton found himself in the second-tier of wide receiver prospects behind Calvin Ridley and D.J. Moore, and the Broncos gladly took him in the second round once they were on the clock.

Denver drafted him for a reason, he was going to be the heir apparent to veteran Demaryius Thomas. Sure enough, the Broncos traded Thomas to the Houston Texans at the trade deadline, and Sutton immediately rose to the top of the depth chart.

Last season was Sutton’s first full season as the top wideout on the roster, and he shined with the lack of complementary weapons in the passing attack. Through all 16 games, Sutton hauled in 72-of-124 targets for 1,112 yards and six scores.

Of those number of targets, Sutton only dropped five passes, per Pro Football Reference. You have to give Sutton credit, because he put up those numbers with the revolving door at quarterback that included Joe Flacco and Brandon Allen.

Now, with the 2020 season looming, Sutton is in a much greater position to succeed. The Broncos added a crisp route runner in Alabama’s Jerry Jeudy and a solid slot receiver in Penn State’s KJ Hamler in this year’s NFL Draft.

Add up-and-coming tight end Noah Fant and a rushing duo of Melvin Gordon and Phillip Lindsay to the mix, and you’ve got yourself a dangerous offense. Opposing defenses are bound to have fits containing all of those players, which will work to Sutton’s benefit once he spots lapses in the defense.

Make no mistake about it, Sutton is going to blow last season’s statistics out of the water in 2020.
