No, Rey Mysterio’s eye didn’t really pop out on TV

Don’t worry: Rey Mysterio didn’t really lose an eye on live TV.

The “eye for an eye match” tagline for Seth Rollins and Rey Mysterio’s latest meeting on WWE Extreme Rules was, for lack of a better term, a bit on the nose. The last time they had met a few months ago, Rollins had forced Mysterio’s eye onto a few steel steps, which led to the former champion losing his vision in one eye.

When they met again at The Horror Show this week for Extreme Rules, that “eye for an eye” label seemed to turn quite literal for a second.

Despite Mysterio’s best attempts to go full-scale Old Testament and exact his revenge, Rollins sadistically attempted to put his opponent’s eye out once again. Ultimately, he settled for the same approach as last time, using the steel steps to try and separate Mysterio’s eyball from its socket once again.

For the briefest of horrifying moments, it appeared as though he had actually done it, with Rollins suddenly turning away in disgust and Mysterio curling up on the ground as the medical trainers swooped in and the referee called the match.

Never fear: Rey Mysterio’s eye is actually fine.

However, as the close-up photos show on TalkSport, the eyeball Mysterio was holding was clearly fake. There was also an obvious lack of blood for such a serious injury, once the viewer took a moment to think about it.

More than likely, Mysterio either had the prop eyeball on his person the whole time or it was given to him by the referee during a break in the action. It was reported during the pay-per-view that Mysterio was sent to the doctor and there was a good chance of his eye being saved, so that’s most likely the direction his story will take next to account for his eye actually being fine.

Next. WWE no longer needs to rely on cinematic matches. dark
