3 players Cowboys can target now that Jamal Adams isn’t available
Now that they’ve lost out on Jamal Adams, these five players could be trade targets for the Dallas Cowboys.
As Jamal Adams tried to push for the New York Jets to trade him, the Dallas Cowboys have been seen as his favored landing spot and they are definitely in the market for a top-end safety. But they snoozed too long, and on Saturday the Seattle Seahawks got a deal done to get Adams.
In the wake of the trade news, SI Cowboys Insider Mike Fisher reported the Cowboys did not make a “recent bid” for Adams. Given what the Seattle gave up, safety Bradley McDougald, first-round picks in 2021 and 2022 and a third-round pick in 2021, Dallas may have moved out of the running for Adams earlier than anyone knew.
On that note, perhaps the Cowboys have been engaged in trade talks with other teams on other players. So a pivot from Adams very well already has been on the radar in Dallas, and now a move could come quickly without the backlash that would go something like–“Adams was still available, and you got him?
With said pivot in mind, here are three players the Cowboys could now target in trade with Adams off the board.
3. Anthony Harris, S, Minnesota Vikings
Harris was franchise tagged by the Vikings, and now without a multi-year deal he’ll play the 2020 season for $11.44 million. Minnesota now has a lot of cap money tied up in safeties Harris and Harrison Smith, and the outlook for giving Harris a deal to his liking next March isn’t good even without the prospect of a lower salary cap for 2021.
Harris had breakout season in 2019, with six interceptions, 11 pass breakups and 60 total tackles. Pro Football Focus graded him out as the second-best safety in the league.
Harris was an easier trade target earlier in the offseason, with the New York Giants, Cleveland Browns and Tampa Bay Buccaneers as possible suitors. The Cowboy would have to send a player/salary back to the Vikings in a trade (Michael Gallup? Anthony Brown? Jourdan Lewis?), or extend Harris right away to reduce his cap number for this year. But it can be done, and perhaps the Vikings would entertain the idea of trading Harris if the right offer came along.
