Alex Smith’s incredible comeback to the NFL has taken another step forward.

Back in 2018, Alex Smith suffered one of the most gruesome injuries seen on an NFL field. With a tibia and fibula fracture, things would only get worse for Smith. His life, let alone his football career, was put in jeopardy in the surgeries that followed.

Since then, Smith has walked the long road to recovery, trying to get his physical normalcy back and even wanting to return to the football field again. 2020 was his target date and the Washington Football Team recently announced that Smith has been cleared for football activities in an unbelievable story that is only reaching its climax.

While the 2020 NFL season sits in jeopardy, Smith’s journey continues to grow, as Tom Pelissero reports that his physical should place him on the PUP roster when the season begins.

This isn’t any confirmation that we will see Smith on opening day, but it does bode well for his hopes of playing in 2020. Instead of shutting him down, Smith and the Washington Football Team are keeping their options open, and that in itself is a remarkable achievement.

What would an Alex Smith comeback mean for Washington?

In a time of turmoil for the Washington organization, they must be pleased to have some piece of good news. Smith was signed to a massive four-year, $94 million deal back in 2018, hoping to be the franchise quarterback after his success with San Francisco.

While Dwyane Haskins has developed into a serviceable starting quarterback, having Smith back in any capacity will provide a level of excitement to a locker room that desperately needs it.

One thing is for sure, Alex Smith’s journey is only continuing and one day it will culminate in a return to the field, whenever that may be.
