Drew Brees is donating $5 million to build medical centers throughout Louisiana.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees made his second donation toward Louisiana coronavirus relief on Monday, announcing via Instagram that he will donate another $5 million to build medical centers throughout the state.

The announcement comes just months after Brees donated $5 million to distribute meals throughout the state, and is just the latest in a long line of philanthropic efforts by the NFL’s all-time leading passer.

The former Walter Payton Man of the Year explained his motivation behind the donation, seeking to promote the health and well-being of his home state as the coronavirus pandemic continues to tear through the southern United States.

No one will criticize Drew Brees for this act of goodwill.

While Brees recently came under fire for his comments on the NFL’s national anthem protests before backtracking on his comments, he is unlikely to receive criticism for this decision. With Louisiana struggling to contain the coronavirus and available hospital space quickly drying up, Brees’ donation should help alleviate some of the stress that medical centers are under.

The donation not only buys hospitals time, but the construction of additional medical centers will help to save more lives in the area. Brees joined Saints teammate Michael Thomas, who vowed to wipe out medical debt for needy families, in making a selfless gesture for the good of his state.

While the future of the 2020 NFL season is still somewhat in doubt, especially considering a recent spike in cases in the MLB, Brees appears to realize that this pandemic is bigger than football. With the United States struggling to contain the coronavirus, the league may have a difficult decision to make if players test positive.

Continued efforts by other athletes to offer pandemic relief could ultimately accelerate the nation’s recovery and ensure that sports are able to resume. As a result, Brees deserves praise for his generous donation, as he clearly seems dedicated to Louisiana’s well-being.
