The Washington Nationals skipper is frightened with COVID-19 outbreak in MLB.

MLB went with an unorthodox approach to the 2020 season. Instead of implementing a bubble environment, the league and players union opted to play against teams in their geographical region and inside their respective ball parks. On Monday, that plan showed it wasn’t feasible, as the Miami Marlins confirmed they had over 10 players and coaches test positive for COVID-19 over the weekend.

After the news broke, Washington Nationals manager Davey Martinez emotionally admitted to the media that he’s “scared” upon hearing about the league’s coronavirus outbreak.

Davey Martinez is more susceptible to COVID-19

Ever since the pandemic hit North America back in March, Martinez has said he’s taken every precaution in the book, from increasing the amount of times he washes his hands throughout the day and wearing a mask wherever he goes. The reasoning behind it is that Martinez has a heart condition, which caused him to miss a brief amount of time last season.

The threat heightens upon hearing that Boston Red Sox pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez developed myocarditis, which is inflammation of the heart muscle, after contracting COVID-19.

Additionally, the coronavirus hit Martinez’s clubhouse, as Juan Soto tested positive prior to last Thursday’s Opening Day game against the New York Yankees. Soto did receive a negative test on Monday, per Martinez, which means he’ll need one more negative before he can return to the team.

Martinez’s response showcases the human element of the game. Yes, the players and manager’s are larger than life figures on our television screens. But we can’t gloss over the fact that they’re just like the rest of us. The coronavirus isn’t picky in terms of choosing a host, so it’s of the utmost importance to be as safe as possible through this ongoing pandemic to prevent spreading the virus to your family, friends and total strangers.

We’re all one team and it’s time for us to finally work together to curb the spread of COVID-19.
