Ohio State football: 5 bold predictions for the Buckeyes in 2020
3. Justin Fields breaks Ohio State single-season passing yards record
Already No. 3 on the single-season passing yards list, Fields has already left a great mark in Ohio State football record with 3,273 passing yards in 2019.
But that feat doesn’t even hold a candle to what Dwayne Haskins did the year prior throwing for 4,831 yards to absolutely smash Joe Germaine’s record of 3,330 yards set in 1998. Justin Fields will need to have a Heisman type year to overcome a record like that and we all know that he has that type of potential.
Stud running back J.K. Dobbins is off to play for the Ravens and Master Teague III will miss significant time due to injury in 2020. That leaves a big question mark at the running back position for Ohio State in 2020. Oklahoma transfer Trey Sermon looks to be the leader to take most of the snaps but who knows how he will mesh in Columbus.
This is important because it means that more of a load is going to be put on Justin Fields to pass the ball. We saw this in Haskins’s record-setting year as well as J.K. Dobbins had a down season, and Haskins was forced to often take over passing the ball for the Buckeyes.
The very same could happen this season, and it is no secret that head coach and Buckeye offensive coordinator in 2018 loves to pass the ball. The uncertainty of the running back position combined with this sets up Fields to have another massive season passing the ball. One that I believe with top the record books.
