These five players could be breakout stars for Georgia football in 2020.

Success has been pretty easy to come by for Georgia football since head coach Kirby Smart arrived back in Athens. The program’s leader has won double-digit games in every season except his first with the Bulldogs and, as you look at their roster for the 2020 season, it’s a safe bet to say that wouldn’t be changing if we were having a full season. The bigger question, though, is if they can get over the hump.

Winning the big one — especially against Alabama — has eluded Georgia under Smart’s watch. But in the 2020 season, the Dawgs have an opportunity to make some noise. Graduate transfer Jamie Newman could provide a necessary spark at quarterback around a deep group of position players. Most importantly, UGA could possess the best defense in the nation this year.

Even still, the Bulldogs have some key players from last year’s 12-2 team that need to be replaced. With this roster, though, that only makes way for new stars to break out in Athens. These five Georgia footbal players, in particular, have breakout candidate written all over them.

Georgia football breakout candidate No. 5: Zamir White, RB

This almost feels like cheating but you have to include running back Zamir White when you’re talking about players who could break out in the 2020 season for Georgia. Simply put, the young ball carrier is the perfect mix of talent and opportunity that is necessary to make a new star in college football.

White came to Athens out of Laurinburg, NC with a ton of hype. He was the No. 1 running back in the 2018 recruiting class but also the No. 9 overall prospect, a testament to just how special of an athlete and talent he is. Moreover, he’s already flashed his physical gifts in limited work, taking 78 carries for 408 yards and three touchdowns last season while working behind D’Andre Swift and Brian Herrien on the depth chart.

The critical factor for White, though, is that Swift and Herrien are now gone for the professional ranks. Though there are some other talented player on the roster who will get touches, White is essentially a shoo-in to be the lead back for a program that has consistently churned out one elite running back after another over the past decade.

If there’s anything that could potentially hold White back from being a star in 2020, it’s a new offense that could rely more heavily on the passing game and quarterback rushes. Even still, White is too good to not give a ton of touches too and, if he gets the work, you better believe he’s going to make some special things happen on Saturdays.
