Twins, Cardinals took a moment of silence at 8:46 p.m. to honor George Floyd.

An incredibly moving tribute to George Floyd happened during Tuesday’s Minnesota Twins vs. St. Louis Cardinals game. At 8:46 p.m both teams stopped playing and took a moment of silence to honor Floyd who was killed by Minneapolis police. His death reignited the Black Lives Matter movement all over the world.

This moment of silence was set at a significant time, as 8 minutes and 45 seconds is allegedly how long officer Derek Chauvin, knelt on Floyd’s neck before he died.

This is also significant as the event took place in Minneapolis, the home town of the Minnesota Twins.

Who was George Floyd?

Floyd was reportedly stopped by police for allegedly purchasing something with a counterfeit $20. He would die while in police custody on May 25, 2020. His death and the death of Breonna Taylor who was shot by police in her Lousiville, KY home have become symbols of the Black Lives Matter movement which urges for better training of police officers, defunding the police departments and widespread acknowledgment that racism is still alive and active in society today and needs to stop.

Many MLB teams have done various tributes but this is the first team to honor this kind of tribute.
