Both Chelsea and Manchester City are interested in bringing one of Bayern Munich’s brightest talents to the Premier League this summer.

Bayern Munich face a fight if they want to keep hold of David Alaba this summer. The talented left back is attracting serious interest from both Manchester City and Chelsea. The fact that his contract with the German giants will expire at the end of the 2021 season only complicates matters for Bayern.

Predictably, a number of sides will be extremely interested in Alaba’s services if he becomes available. In addition to Chelsea and Manchester City, The Telegraph claims that Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG, and Inter Milan are all keeping tabs on the 28-year-old.

Bayern would prefer to keep hold of Alaba. That would require the club to offer him a bumper new contract this summer. Alaba and his representatives could easily make an argument for him to become one of the Bundesliga’s top earners. It’s unclear whether or not Bayern officials are ready to compensate him at that level.

If they waver, look for both Chelsea and City to lodge massive bids for his services. The Blues see left-back as a huge area for improvement heading into next season. Leicester City star Ben Chilwell has been considered the club’s top target at that spot for several months, but the Foxes don’t want to part with him. It’s conceivable that Alaba could quickly become Frank Lampard’s top option if it looks as if he’s willing to leave Germany.

The position isn’t quite as pressing for Pep Guardiola, but City want to improve their defense too. Alaba is perfectly suited to play the sort of possession-based game that Guardiola employs. His combination of pace and skill on the ball would make him a nightmare for Premier League defenses to handle on the left flank.

At the moment, the odds still favor Alaba extending his stay with Bayern Munich. That doesn’t mean the German giants can rest easy. If they don’t offer Alaba top dollar they could easily lose him this summer. If that happens, look for a very expensive transfer war to erupt between Chelsea, Manchester City, and several other European giants.
