Oklahoma football breakout candidate No. 3: Austin Stogner, TE

There were many people that had Grant Calcaterra pegged as the best tight end in college football last season. However, when injuries forced him to retire from football, that left the Sooners in a tough spot at the position. Put simply, though they had talent lying in wait, they didn’t have a succession plan readily in place as they were set to simply rely on the veteran Calcaterra.

Now that Calcaterra is officially gone, though, the offense can start to look to find his successor. And while H-back Jeremiah Hall is going to have a role to play in this Oklahoma offense, perhaps even a big one, Austin Stogner appears to be the most readymade replacement for Calcaterra in playing a big and versatile role in Riley’s offense.

As a freshman last season, Stogner flashed some ability, even if he only got limited work. He appeared in only six games on the year but notched seven catches for 66 yards (9.4 yards per reception) with two touchdowns on the year. He’s the type of player who, especially with a young quarterback, could be a huge weapon.

Measuring in at 6-foot-6, 241 pounds, Stogner has good movement skills for a player of his size and has the length and frame to present a matchup problem for most defenses as there arent’ many players who can match him at every part of the route. If he can become a bit more refined from last year, it’s not hard to imagine him becoming one of the favorite targets in the passing game.
