Yoenis Cespedes decided to opt out of season in most absurd way possible

The New York Mets outfielder went AWOL on the team on Sunday
New York Mets fans haven’t had the greatest of week. Between the team blowing games and having poor performances on the field, the Mets dealt with some serious drama on Sunday. Outfielder Yoenis Cespedes failed to report to New York’s game against the Atlanta Braves without informing the team. Reports indicated that Cespedes’ safety wasn’t at risk, but were still puzzled why he’d go AWOL. We now have that reason.
Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen announced that Cespedes has officially opted out of the 2020 MLB season and that the team fully supports his decision.
Cespedes opted out, but did so in the weirdest of ways
The Mets received quite the scare prior to first pitch after noticing that Cespedes was nowhere to be found at Truist Park, especially considering they were on the road and not in Queens, NY. The team tried to contact Cespedes numerous times, but to no avail, and the player never let management aware of his decision prior to the game.
While we can’t fault Cespedes for opting out, he did go about it in the most absurd ways possible. In fact, Van Wagenen said the team sent security to his hotel, only to find his bags packed and the player nowhere to be found, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Cespedes informed the team of his decision through his agent midway through the Sunday matinee.
Considering he participated in eight games this season, his contract will officially run out at the end of the campaign. Through his Mets tenure, Cespedes tallied a .279 batting average and .883 OPS while hitting 76 home runs and 205 RBI.
Let it be known that Cespedes’ opt out and subsequent exit from the Mets organization will go down in history as one of the strangest in the franchise’s history.
