Borussia Dortmund have made the tough decision to sell Jadon Sancho. Fortunately, they’ve already identified a replacement for the English starlet.

Dortmund officials were optimistic they could hold on to Jadon Sancho for one more season when the Bundesliga season ended, but those dreams were dashed when Manchester United met the club’s astronomical asking price. Fortunately for fans of the German giants, the club are wasting no time in moving to secure Sancho’s replacement.

Price will clearly not be a big issue after receiving somewhere in the neighborhood of £100 million for Sancho. That doesn’t mean the Bundesliga runners-up will run out and spend that entire sum on one single player. Expect Dortmund to try to strengthen their entire squad with the proceeds from Sancho’s sale.

A hefty portion of the fee will be reinvested in an attacker capable of making an immediate impact on the starting XI. Dortmund have done a terrific job of purchasing high-level youth players from clubs all over the world in recent years. That practice is continuing this summer, but it doesn’t relieve the club from the need to add an instant impact player to supplement next year’s squad.

To that end, Dortmund have identified Lyon attacker Memphis Depay as their No. 1 target to fill the void left by Sancho’s departure. Ironically, the 26-year-old attacker endured a nightmare spell at Old Trafford before rehabilitating his reputation in France. Dortmund officials believe that his best football is still in front of him. His play this year from Lyon certainly makes him look like an attacker who is capable of fitting into Dortmund’s free-flowing attacking style.

The unanswered question is what sort of transfer fee Lyon will require to get a deal done. The news of Sancho’s gigantic fee is going to push the price up since every club in Europe knows that Dortmund have cash to spend.

Transfermarkt currently estimates Memphis’ transfer value at just over £48 million. That’s a price Dortmund can afford and it’s also a fee that Lyon would likely feel compelled to accept. It’s expected that Memphis would be enthusiastic about the idea of moving to the German club.

Next. Arsenal have ulterior motive for wanting Willian. dark

Don’t look for Dortmund to wait too long before making a decisive move to replace Sancho. If they get the idea that Lyon isn’t willing to part with Memphis, they will quickly move on to other targets. It remains a very fluid situation for Lucien Favre’s squad. Memphis is the side’s top target at the moment, but he’s not the only acceptable replacement for Sancho on Dortmund’s shopping list.
