Manchester United are working hard to pressure Dortmund into dropping their asking price for Jadon Sancho. Their tactics include flirting with a Bayern ace.

Reports of Jadon Sancho’s imminent move to Manchester United seem to have been exaggerated. The Red Devils are still doing everything within their power to force Dortmund into lowering their demands for the English starlet. The Premier League club’s latest tactic is to express interest in Bayern star Kingsley Coman.

According to Goal.com, United officials are still prioritizing Sancho, but are prepared to shift their interest to Coman quickly if Dortmund continue to hold a stern line in negotiations. Bayern aren’t excited at the prospect of letting Coman go, but their asking price for his services would be significantly less than their German counterparts are asking for Sancho.

No one should expect Dortmund to be overly moved by United’s latest threat. The Bundesliga runner-ups feel no financial pressure to part with Sancho this summer. Quite the contrary, their preference is to hold on to their attacking talisman for at least one more season. That’s a big reason why they feel comfortable asking United to pay such a premium.

It’s a gambit that could easily backfire on United officials if they aren’t careful. Dortmund have been open with their desire to conclude any potential deal for Sancho ahead of August 10th. It’s easy to envision a scenario where Dortmund decide they’d love to see United weaken their greatest domestic rival. Getting Coman out of Germany would be a great thing for Dortmund’s quest to dethrone Bayern next season.

Next. Dortmund are already recruiting a replacement for Sancho. dark

In the end, the odds still massively favor United succeeding in their quest to buy Sancho this summer. That doesn’t mean they will succeed in their attempts to bend Dortmund to their will. The German club holds all of the cards in these negotiations. They won’t be moved by the suggestion that United might shift their attention to Coman. This is just a weak attempt by officials at Old Trafford to save a few million pounds.
