The mayor of Austin prefers no fans in attendance at Texas football games.

Texas football could have a special season, but the Austin mayor doesn’t want anyone at DKR.

The mayor of Austin, Texas Steve Adler said is his State of the City address on Wednesday, “he does not support UT football welcoming even 25 percent of the fans into the stadium this fall (25,000 people). “I hope they don’t really try to do this. I’m not sure there’s anywhere in the world that’s having gatherings that size at this point.”

Adler has his law degree from the University of Texas. Even though Austin doesn’t have a major professional sports team yet, although Austin FC begins play in the 2021 MLS season, Texas football has been the biggest thing in town for a very long time. Obviously, Texas athletics are a major driver of Austin’s economy, but this isn’t some podunk college town; it’s the state capital.

How weird would no fans in the stands be at Texas football games this year?

For Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, a college football cathedral that seats 100,000, to be completely empty outside of the players, coaching staff and other essential personnel, you better believe it will look weird. Then again, we have adjusted to not seeing fans in seats at MLB games, as well as life in the various bubbles scattered across the United States for other leagues.

The Big 12 is going with a nine-plus-one model for 2020, meaning everybody in the Big 12 will play everybody once as it normally does, with an additional non-conference game. The top two teams in Big 12 play will duke it out for the conference championship game as they have for the last few years. Texas is a contender to win the Big 12 and make the College Football Playoff.

We’ve talked ad nauseam about Texas football and how it’s not yet back. The only way for Texas to be officially back for real this time is to win the Big 12 and represent the Power 5 conference in the College Football Playoff. No other New Year’s Six bowl appearance or even victory will suffice the nature of Texas being back. They will be back one day, and it could be in 2020 for all we know.

It be a shame if Texas is on its way to be back and nobody can attend their games in 2020.
