Tottenham are smart to try to mine Brentford for attacking talent, but they’re chasing the wrong attacker employed by the Championship club.

Brentford’s failure to secure promotion to the Premier League puts them at risk to lose several of their brightest stars. Tottenham are one of the clubs interested in taking advantage of their situation. Unfortunately for Spurs, they’re eyeing the wrong Championship attacker.

Said Benrahma and Ollie Watkins are the two Brentford attackers generating the most transfer interest this summer. The pair combined for an eye-popping 43 goals and 12 assists during the 2019-20 season. It’s easy to see why a host of Premier League clubs are interested in the pair.

Is Tottenham prioritizing their moves as best as they should?

Surprisingly, Tottenham seems to be more interested in the Algerian International. According to The Mirror, the Bees are willing to let Benrahma go if they receive a bid of £25 million for his services. Spurs value him at a figure closer to £16 million, but it’s believed the two clubs can come to an agreement if they enter into serious negotiations.

The error Tottenham are making is in their failure to prioritize a move for Watkins. He’s just the sort of young striker that Jose Mourinho should be looking to purchase this summer. Spurs’ decision to let Troy Parrott go on loan to Milwall means they must buy a backup striker this summer to provide quality cover for Harry Kane. Watkins may not be ready to lead Tottenham’s line on a regular basis, but he would be an excellent No. 2 option for the club.

For the record, Spurs aren’t making a mistake by investigating a move for Benrahma. He also profiles as a player who is ready to step up to the Premier League and help Tottenham next season. He just isn’t the classic frontman that Spurs need to prioritize over all else. The majority of Berhamma’s success comes when playing as a wide forward. Mourinho can use another option to help bolster his attack out wide, but it’s not as big of a need as finding a second striker.

dark. Next. Tottenham prepare to take giant transfer risk

In the end, Spurs supporters shouldn’t be surprised to see the club express a strong interest in both Brentford stars in the coming weeks. Both players carry significant potential without a price tag that will torpedo the club’s finances. With a little luck, Tottenham will shift their attention from Benrahma to Watkins as talks progress.
