Christian Yelich finally had a reason to celebrate Thursday night.

Christian Yelich is off to a brutal start in 2020. He is still only hitting .111 in game games and has 17 strikeouts in 36 at-bats.

Yet there was one bright spot and it came Thursday night in a much-needed 8-3 victory for the Milwaukee Brewers over the Chicago White Sox. Yelich hit a fly-ball to left field that was terribly misplayed by Eloy Jimenez and the result was an inside-the-park home run. The play could have been ruled an error, but it still resulted in Yelich rounding the bases for his second home run of the season.

The 2018 National League MVP gave an honest answer about how much the home run meant to him.

Christian Yelich trying to turn it around

He could not have been anymore honest. His Brewers have managed to post a 5-5 record even with Yelich’s struggles and after Lorenzo Cain decided to opt out of the season earlier this month.

Yelich also drew four walks in the game, which more than doubled his previous total of three on the season. He saw his on-base percentage jump from .162 to .256 in the span of one night.

Such an increase points out the small sample size we are still dealing with in the early part of the season. However, the shortened schedule makes every game feel like three and what used to be a slow April is now a slow start for half of the season. Yelich was hitting .088 before getting his inside-the-park home run and that number is alarming regardless of the number of games played.

The hope with Yelich is that his totals will get back near his career averages. All his marks are so low that he could have a three-hit night and start looking like his old self. Saying he has been awful at least shows he is aware of his struggles and maybe this one big hit, coupled with the defensive blunder, will help him finally turn things around.
