Deshaun Watson discusses the benefits of having new play-caller
Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson is looking forward to having a new play-caller for the 2020 season.
Deshaun Watson spoke with reporters Friday about having a new play-caller in second-year offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tim Kelly. Head Coach and General Manager Bill O’Brien was the primary play-caller before him, and Watson discussed the benefit of having his offensive coordinator calling plays.
Watson finished the 2019-20 season throwing for 3,852 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. The Texans finished first in the AFC South with a 10-6 record clinching a playoff spot and the division. Despite losing 51-31 to the Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round, they had key wins against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Los Angeles Chargers, the Chiefs, Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots.

How much will Deshaun Watson benefit from Tim Kelly calling plays for the Texans offense?
Watson mentioned when speaking to reporters that O’Brien didn’t have a vast amount of time to meet with Watson that was purely devoted to play-calling. That’s understandable given the fact that he is the head coach, so he has to be everywhere talking to position coaches about their units in addition to doing everything that comes with being the general manager of the franchise. Watson also took the time to applaud Kelly for the work he has done putting together game-plans and scripts for he and the offense.
It was announced back in February that Kelly would have his new role with the team and the good news for Houston Texans fans is both of these guys are excited about the potential of this new scheme.
According to Texans Insider and Lead Writer Deepi Sidhu, Kelly believes having familiarity with the offense and knowing what different players do and don’t do well will be key in making sure he can get the most out of them. Watson and Kelly will start this new chapter in Week 1 against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium on September 12.
