Texas football is going to play football because it’s Texas, good for them.

If you think you can tell Texas football not to play football in 2020, well, think again, buddy.

With the Big Ten reportedly canceling its 2020 college football season, and the Pac-12 possibly following their lead, the ACC, the Big 12 and the SEC remain steadfast on having a college football season. You can look at any number of schools in the later three of those Power 5 conferences and feel good about their chances of playing ball this fall. For the Big 12, look at the Texas Longhorns.

Will Texas football lead by example to help us get Big 12 football action?

Along with the Oklahoma Sooners, Texas is one of two blue-blood programs in the Big 12. They are the big boys in their Power 5 conference, and they usually get their way. Texas understands the risks at hand of playing a college football season in the age of the coronavirus, as well as the loss of revenue that’ll come from reduced capacity crowds, yet they still feel good about playing.

College football analysts such as FOX’s Joel Klatt have been adamant about the safest place for players to be this year is on campus. While players may still stay on campus and be students even if college football isn’t played, it is liability concerns that may prevent the season from happening in other Power 5 conferences outside of the Big Ten. We’ll have to wait and see what happens.

Like most Big 12 schools, Texas football is the biggest thing in town. Austin may be the state capital, but how many other Big 12 schools play in large metropolises in their respective states? Fort Worth, Texas is always the second city of note when grouped with Dallas. Norman isn’t all that far away from the state capital of Oklahoma. Outside of that, it’s pretty rural in the Big 12.

Though the Big Ten will make its decision a formality on Tuesday, don’t necessarily group in other Power 5 conferences like the Big 12 where Texas plays to punt on having a season entirely. It seems that more people in the college football landscape are like SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey in that they will be willing to exhaust all resources to have any shot at having a 2020 season.
