The Washington Capitals and New York Islanders face off in Game 1 of their first-round matchup

The NHL’s Stanley Cup Qualifying Round is over, which means the real playoffs begin. The Eastern Conference side of the bracket is set, and will feature a Metropolitan Division matchup between the No. 3 Washington Capitals and the No. 7 New York Islanders.

Washington were participants in the round robin, and emerged with the third seed. They were on the losing end to the hot Philadelphia Flyers and overpowered Tampa Bay Lightning, but they did earn their lone win against the struggling Boston Bruins. Perhaps the most shocking revelation of the seeding games was that star winger Alex Ovechkin failed to score a point in all three contests. Can he do so at the expense of their division rivals?

As for the New York Islanders, they easily disposed of the Florida Panthers as many fans and pundits expected. New York outscored Florida 14-6 in the four games, and that was with $70 million man Sergei Bobrovsky in between the pipes. The biggest star of the series for New York was winger Anthony Beauvillier, who tallied three goals and two assists.

Oh, and we can’t gloss over the fact that this is officially the “Barry Trotz Revenge Series!” Trotz was the head coach of the Capitals when they won their first-ever Stanley Cup back in 2018. However, Washington opted not to re-up the veteran coach that offseason, and the Islanders quickly swooped in to secure his services. You have to believe Trotz would love to stick it to his former team. But will the Capitals give him that satisfaction remains the question.
