3. Derek Carr, Las Vegas Raiders

Derek Carr is truly confounding. In the last two seasons, he’s statistically about the eighth-best quarterback in all of football via passer rating. In this period, he has a higher passer rating than Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Carson Wentz, Jared Goff, and Philip Rivers, to name a few.

Do we really think he’s better than Rodgers or Brady? No. But his efficiency numbers emphatically dictate that he is. Is Carr the type of player that could be inserted into the New England Patriots offense and carry them to an AFC Champshionship game? Maybe. Has he carried the Raiders to prosperity? Absolutely not.

As a starter for the Raiders, Carr has a 39-55 record. Unfortunately for his sake, that is downright poor. Even a signal-caller like Kirk Cousins was nearly .500 with a bottom-feeding organization like the Washington Football team.

Because of this duality of performance (good individual numbers vs. poor team output), Raider Nation seems evenly split on the opinion of Carr’s longterm prognosis. It’s probably reasonable to assume the Las Vegas front office is, too.

Carr signed on long-term with the Raiders in 2017, and the bulk of his guaranteed cash has since been paid out. Should Las Vegas go in a different direction, it would not be a financial nightmare to release him.

Later on in this piece, a possible replacement for Carr will be discussed.
