The woeful week for the New York Mets reached continued on Thursday afternoon.

The New York Mets‘ week has been a bit of a mixed bag. They lost pitcher Marcus Stroman after he opted out of the 2020 season, but their bats finally came to life on Wednesday evening and the team is close to being sold. Unfortunately for them, they snapped back to reality on Thursday.

During a matinee game against the rival Washington Nationals, Mets outfielder Jeff McNeil made an impressive running catch to prevent an extra base hit by first baseman Asdrubal Cabrera and two runs from potentially being scored.

Pitcher David Peterson saluted his outfielder, but the thing is, McNeil suffered an apparent left leg injury after running full force into with the outfield wall. McNeil could not put any weight on his leg, and was forced to depart the game on a cart.

Mets manager Luis Rojas replaced McNeil with veteran MLB outfielder Billy Hamilton as a result of this injury.

Seriousness of McNeil’s injury still unknown

When watching the replay, you can see that his left leg make significant impact with the wall. To make matters worse, McNeil had to wait an extended amount of time for the cart to arrive.

McNeil started off the season at third base, but transitioned to the outfield because J.D. Davis’ play at the hot corner. If the injury is serious, the Mets outfield depth chart took yet another hit, as the team already lost Yoenis Cespedes after he opted out during their road trip in Atlanta earlier this month.

Entering Thursday’s matinee game, McNeil recorded a .293 batting average, .389 on-base percentage and .362 slugging percentage, while notching 17 hits (third-best on team) and seven RBI’s.
