Ryan Day believes he had something special in 2020.

The Ohio State Buckeyes were set to enter the 2020 college football season as legitimate title contenders once again. Head coach Ryan Day led the team to a 13-1 finish in his first full year as head coach and believed his team was even better in 2020.

Day has been fighting to get his team on the field and made some comments sharing just how much he believes in his current roster.

Ryan Day saw the potential in these Buckeyes

Fans must remember the Buckeyes had three players from the 2019 squad get drafted in the first round this year and had 10 players taken overall. The team lost legitimate stars in Chase Young, Jeff Okudah and J.K. Dobbins and still projected to be great this season.

Even with all the stars on that 2019 squad, Day couldn’t stop himself from hyping up the 2020 squad.

"“As a coach, you work your whole life for the opportunity to coach a team like this,” he said, his voice catching. “This team is special. It’s special because it’s talented. It’s special because it has leadership. It’s special because it has character. This could have been a once-in-a-lifetime team.”"

One of the top reasons the Buckeyes were legitimate contenders was because of quarterback Justin Fields. He was a legitimate Heisman favorite this year and is likely done in a Buckeyes uniform even if there is a winter or spring season. He should be focusing on his NFL future at this point.

This is the sign of a great coach. To be fair, Day did in fact have a dominant team to coach. But he doesn’t need to keep going on about his group. He could have even decided to take some time to collect himself after the season was canceled.

Day instead chose the option that shows his strong leadership and why the school gave him the head coaching job after Urban Meyer. The head coach is still fighting to play sometime soon and genuinely appears to care about his players. The Buckeyes are in good hands no matter if the team plays this fall in some capacity or not until 2021.
