The Dallas Cowboys have gone unorthodox with their wide receiver drills.

No team in the NFL will be more elite at one-handed catches this year than the Dallas Cowboys.

How can we even possibly come to this conclusion? Was Odell Beckham Jr. traded to “America’s Team” overnight? Is Cris Carter their new wide receivers coach? No, but we do have plenty of evidence to prove the truth. You need to watch the greatest and most unorthodox wide receiver drill you’ll see in your entire life. Turns out, Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup are exceptional at it.

When former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy was out of football last year, he cracked the code on how to get more production out of his wide receivers when he resurfaced on his new team. While this monumental breakthrough has nothing to do with running better routes to create separation, he understands the exact science of perfecting the one one-handed catch.

Cooper has dropped a lot of balls in his career, but with a sweet pair of unnecessary John Lennon sideburns and improving one-handed receiving skills, quarterback Dak Prescott will feel as confident throwing him the football as Drew Brees does for five-yard gains with Michael Thomas on the New Orleans Saints. This drill is how Gallup without a doubt achieves Pro Bowl status.

When it comes to contested catches between Cowboys teammates, there is no tandem I want to collectively come up with the pigskin more than Cooper and Gallup. If the NFL is ready to count half-catches as a stat, Dallas will lead the league in its first year of creation. We’re looking for new and creative ways to keep track of statistics, so why not add half-catches to the mix in 2020?

Even with the most cutting edge wide receiver drills out on the market, Dallas should be one of the seven best teams in the NFC this year. While they may not have the consistency top-down as the arch rival Philadelphia Eagles do, we have a strong belief McCarthy will be a reason the Cowboys are back in the postseason. Let’s hope he’s not a born-again sideline percussionist.
