With Alvin Kamara’s contract status up in the air following this season, every statement matters

Despite a new contract being handed out to the likes of Christian McCaffrey by the Carolina Panthers this offseason, the division rival New Orleans Saints have opted to wait on a new deal for their stud rusher in Kamara.

The Tennessee product has out-performed his NFL Draft grade and then some. He’s set to make just over $2 million in 2020 — surely an undervalued financial hit — and will want to earn what’s rightfully his heading into his age-26 season.

Kamara got fans all riled up on Monday with a vague tweet that could mean…well, frankly anything.

What should we make of Kamara’s tweet?

Kamara could theoretically hold out considering he’s not even eligible for the franchise tag at this time. That $2.1 million price tag is rather insulting given his talents at this juncture, even if his 2019 campaign was a little injury-plagued. Fans, perhaps rightfully, are a little concerned.

With Drew Brees potentially retiring after this season, New Orleans and Sean Payton will have to rely even heavier on their run game moving forward. Kamara, for obvious reasons, plays a major role in that unless the Saints think they can replicate his talents in the 2021 NFL Draft class. That’ll be tough to do given the uncertain nature of the coming college football season.

Kamara does so much for this Saints team, including emerging as a receiving threat out of the backfield. Simply punting on his future, or getting him riled up as a point of pride, doesn’t seem like a smart decision in the long run.

Next. Alvin Kamara needs to have his best year for Saints to pay him big money. dark
