Gerald McCoy delivers message to Cowboys fans from hospital bed (Video)

Gerald McCoy isn’t fake. He still plans to be a mentor to the Dallas Cowboys young players.

Gerald McCoy had season-ending surgery on his ruptured quadriceps and was released by the Dallas Cowboys as a result. He will continue to do what he has always done throughout his career. Being a mentor for the young guys on the Cowboys defense despite the release shows good character on his part.

The former first-round pick of the 2010 NFL Draft was going to be a welcome veteran presence on the Cowboys defensive line this season. He spent one season in Carolina where he recorded 37 tackles, seven tackles for loss, and five sacks. According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, the Cowboys let him go as part of a provision in his three-year, $18 million deal signed back in March. He had an injury waiver in that contract due to chronic tendonitis in his right knee/quadriceps. He can keep the $3 million signing bonus but is not owed the $2.5 million base salary or the $750,000 roster bonus.

Where does Gerald McCoy go from here?

Well, the good news is the Cowboys can still re-sign him when fully healthy. All he can do right now is rehab the quadriceps and continue to be the mentor to young players on his now-former team. He can still play. Gerald McCoy is no scrub. He wouldn’t have been a six-time Pro Bowler with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers if he were. As he said, he is only a phone call or text away and the guys have his number. He will continue to watch anywhere he can. He wanted to make one last thing clear, the young guys haven’t gotten rid of him. He will be back.
