Brutal news has arrived for the South Carolina Gamecocks, with freshman running back MarShawn Lloyd tearing his ACL during practice this week.

Entering the 2020 campaign, true freshman running back MarShawn Lloyd was expected to make an immediate impact for Will Muschamp and the South Carolina Gamecocks. Unfortunately for the youngster, his season is over before it even was able to begin.

Heartbreaking news has arrived for Lloyd, as Muschamp confirmed on Thursday the 5-9, 211-pounder suffered a torn ACL during practice and has officially been ruled out for the rest of the season.

Lloyd was a highly-touted prospect coming out of DeMatha Catholic in Maryland, but he’ll now have to wait until next year to make his anticipated debut.

Gamecocks’ MarShawn Lloyd was ranked the No. 5 running back for the 2020 class and had well over 20 offers

Lloyd was one of the top running backs for his class. When he signed with South Carolina last December, he did so over additional tenders from Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Boston College, Georgia, Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio State, Notre Dame and many other powerhouses.

He was ranked the No. 5 running back in the country per 247Sports and the No. 43 player in the country overall.

“I’m extremely disappointed for MarShawn,” Muschamp said in a team release. “It was a non-contact situation where he just planted his foot and tore his ACL. MarShawn will attack his rehabilitation like he does everything in life. The best is yet to come for MarShawn Lloyd.”

Lloyd was spotted on crutches after practice on Wednesday and will now prepare himself for his knee surgery. South Carolina has been hard at work during camp in preparation for its Week 1 battle with Tennessee on Sept. 26.

Unfortunately for Muschamp and the rest of his offense, Lloyd won’t be taking the field that day and instead will look to work overtime in his rehabilitation.
