Mike McCarthy says the Cowboys are focused on winning a Super Bowl

Mike McCarthy has his sights set on bringing a Super Bowl back to Dallas.

The Dallas Cowboys haven’t been relevant in the Super Bowl discussion since the mid-90s when Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, and Emmitt Smith were responsible for leading the franchise to three titles. Now, they have a Super Bowl-winning head coach in Mike McCarthy who believes that if a team is not trying to win a Super Bowl, he questions why they are in the business, according to ESPN’s Todd Archer.

Mike McCarthy won Super Bowl XLV  in 2010 with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback in his prime. Ten years later, Rodgers is still in Green Bay under second-year Head Coach Matt LaFleur and has to navigate the Packers drafting his successor Jordan Love in this year’s draft. McCarthy, on the other hand, has a fresh start with a team in the Dallas Cowboys that could have an exciting offense to watch. They drafted Oklahoma Sooners wide receiver CeeDee Lamb with their first-round pick. Dak Prescott will have Lamb, Amari Cooper, and Michael Gallup to throw to this season.

Is Mike McCarthy capable of leading the Dallas Cowboys to a Super Bowl?

After coaching the Packers to that lone Super Bowl victory, the Packers went 5-6 in the postseason and they didn’t make the playoffs his last two years there. Is it possible with the talent he has on the Cowboys roster? Yes, however, the Cowboys have only won four postseason games since their last Super Bowl. In order for McCarthy to lead the Cowboys back to the big game, a lot of things have to go right for them and little to nothing can go wrong.

For example, Tyron Smith suffered a practice injury during individual drills. If that’s not bad enough, La’el Collins was involved in a major car crash before arriving at Cowboys practice Thursday morning. That’s two major blows to the offensive line and the season is a few weeks away from kicking off. While everyone should wish both of them a speedy recovery, things like that aren’t good for the team’s Super Bowl or playoff hopes in general.

The jury is still out on whether Mike McCarthy is the guy to bring the Dallas Cowboys back to playoff relevancy. You have to start somewhere. Cowboys fans should temper their expectations until he proves himself.
