In their first of many Egg Bowls, look for Mike Leach to beat Lane Kiffin.

Mike Leach may have the upper hand over Lane Kiffin when it comes to winning the Egg Bowl first.

According to SportsBetting.ag, Leach’s Mississippi State Bulldogs have better odds to win the SEC West and the SEC Championship game over Lane Kiffin’s Ole Miss Rebels. Though winning both appear to be a long shot for either Mississippi public university, these odds do suggest Leach takes Egg Bowl No. 1 between he and Kiffin on the road in Oxford on Nov. 28.

Why should we care so much about who’s going to finish in fifth place?

For those who don’t get, they will never get that they don’t get it. You may think the Iron Bowl is the best rivalry in college football, and you wouldn’t be wrong, but you’re not going to be entertained to the degree you will be with the beautiful, triumphant magnificence that is the illustrious and most sacred Egg Bowl. Do you even remember what happened last Thanksgiving?

Ole Miss scored a touchdown late in the game and the dog pee celebration happened. The Rebels were going to win, but one lifted leg led to Ole Miss alum Matt Luke and his entire staff getting fired. Mississippi State’s Joe Moorhead celebrated his last victory as the Bulldogs’ head coach, as he was whacked after looking flat-out terrible vs. Louisville Cardinals in the Music City Bowl.

Flash forward a several months into quarantine and we’ve almost forget that Mike Leach and Lane Kiffin will be coaching against each other in the freaking Egg Bowl for the next several seasons. It’s “The Pirate” vs. “The Lane Train”. This rivalry now has the the quirkiness of baseball, but the pageantry of SEC football, as it just means more. This game is what college football is all about.

2020 SEC West division title odds

  • Alabama Crimson Tide: -240
  • LSU Tigers: +300
  • Auburn Tigers: +600
  • Texas A&M Aggies: +900
  • Mississippi State Bulldogs: +1800
  • Ole Miss Rebels: +2500
  • Arkansas Razorbacks: +10000

As you can see, Mississippi State and Ole Miss are what we consider to be long shots to win the SEC West. Mississippi State has the fifth-best odds at +1800, while Ole Miss has the sixth-best odds at +2500. Though they have many teams projected to win more ahead of them, they should be proud at the very least they aren’t the Arkansas Razorbacks at +10000. Pig Sooie, they stink!

2020 SEC Conference Championship odds

  • Alabama Crimson Tide: -130
  • Georgia Bulldogs: +250
  • Florida Gators: +550
  • LSU Tigers: +650
  • Texas A&M Aggies: +1200
  • Auburn Tigers: +1400
  • Kentucky Wildcats: +6000
  • Mississippi State Bulldogs: +8000
  • Tennessee Volunteers: +8000
  • Ole Miss Rebels: +10000
  • Missouri Tigers: +12500
  • South Carolina Gamecocks: +12500
  • Arkansas Razorbacks: +25000
  • Vanderbilt Commodores: +50000

Looking at the odds to win the SEC Conference Champion and presumably earn a spot into the College Football Playoff, Mississippi State comes in at +8000, which has the Bulldogs tied with the Tennessee Volunteers for eighth-best odds to pull it off in 2020. As expected, Ole Miss is a little bit behind Mississippi State with the 10th-best odds to win the SEC at +10000. Again, not that great.

Even though going 6-4 in a 10-game, conference-only schedule would be seen as a huge accomplishment for either team, the only thing that matters at the end of the day is beating the snot out of their most formidable foe in the Egg Bowl. Whoever wins the Egg Bowl will likely finish the season at 5-5 and achieve whatever the 2020 equivalent is for bowl eligibility. It’s a huge deal.

Though he’ll win some and lose some, Leach is poised to win his first Egg Bowl before Kiffin does.
