Shawn Porter was a huge favorite over unknown Sebastian Formella going into their bout. Porter had his way in the fight, but Formella showed a lot of heart.

On Saturday, Aug. 22, on FOX, former two-time welterweight champion Shawn Porter returned to the ring after nearly a year layoff against unheralded Sebastian Formella. Porter showed up in phenomenal shape and had his way with Formella.

Porter (31-3-1, 17 KOs), 32, of Las Vegas, Nevada, lost his previous bout to Errol Spence Jr. in September of 2019, losing his WBC title in the process. He came into his match with Formella confident he would get the knockout. He tried his best, but it never happened.

Formella (22-1, 10 KOs), 33, of Germany, was undefeated but lacked any notable wins. He showcased his heart and chin but was never in the fight.

Formella landed jabs before Porter in round 1. Porter had a hard time getting inside of Formella’s reach. He did get Formella on the ropes, but he escaped. It was a good first round for Formella.

Porter made things rough for Formella in round 2. Porter closed the distance and got pounded inside, but mounted an attack. Porter was unphased by Formella’s power. Porter made Formella see stars with a looping uppercut, but he stayed in the fight.

Formella tried to stay on the outside for most of round 3, but when Porter got close, he battered Formella’s head with both hands. Porter briefly trapped Formella on the ropes and smashed his body, but Formella got away, but not for long.

Sebastian Formella surprisingly went the distance with a superior boxer in Shawn Porter.

Porter upped his tempo and looked very relaxed. He bounced on his toes and initiated combinations with his jab. Formella was breaking down.

Formella tried to fight Porter at center ring in round 4. He connected a few times, but Porter walked through him. Porter landed a series of uppercuts that sent Formella’s head flying back. Formella at them well and showed a chin.

The following rounds melted into one. Porter had his way with Formella for the entire fight. He tried numerous times to stop Formella and nearly did in round 7, but Formella displayed an exceptional ability to absorb punishment.

Formella ate Porter’s punches for 12 rounds and made it to the final bell. He deserves credit for his toughness and heart. It was a one-sided fight for Porter, but Formella tried despite being severely overmatched.

All three judges unanimously scored the fight for Porter, giving him every round. It was an easy fight to judge.

Porter is a top welterweight and would give any of the reigning champions a run for their money.
