The Los Angeles Dodgers honor Kobe Bryant on his born day.
The Los Angeles Lakers legend and long time supporter of the Dodgers, Kobe, tragically passed away with his daughter Gianna “Gigi” Bryant and seven others in a fatal helicopter crash on their way to a youth basketball game on January 26. The Dodgers honored the legend ahead of Sunday’s ballgame with a pregame ceremony and special visuals. One included the entire team wearing Bryant jerseys during pregame.
“We miss you, Kobe,” the Dodgers tweeted along with a photo showing the team sporting Kobe jerseys pregame.
Pitcher Kenley Jansen also tweeted out a heart warming message to honor the Bryants.
“Happy birthday in paradise, mamba. It’s an honor to wear your jersey today and dedicate this day to you, Gianna and the Bryant family. #MambaMentality,” Jansen tweeted.
The Dodgers also had the numbers “2” and “24” colored on their pitching mound to honor Kobe and Gigi.
Kobe was an avid supporter of the Dodgers as a resident in California during and after his playing days. This included Kobe announcing the Dodgers lineup in Game 4 of the World Series in 2018 against the Boston Red Sox and once throwing out the first pitch before a ballgame.
The Dodgers are co-owned by Earvin “Magic” Johnson. The former Laker nicknamed “showtime” and friend of Kobe, once differed to Kobe before he retired as the best Laker of all-time. The two both won five championships for the city of Los Angeles in the purple and gold. Kobe, the 18-time NBA All-Star, played all 20 of his NBA seasons for the Lakers.
Kobe would have turned 42 years old today, August 23. In Orange County, August 24 is forever declared “Kobe Bryant Day” as it merges the two numbers he wore for Lakers “8” and “24.”
