Chiefs defensive tackle Mike Pennel has been suspended for the first two games of the 2020 season

A big reason for why the Kansas City Chiefs were able to turn things around when it came to stopping the run was because of Mike Pennel’s dominance up the middle. Pennel came out of nowhere in 2019, but once he was inserted into the lineup on a regular basis, Kansas City saw the difference.

Now Pennel won’t be able to help the Chiefs defense in the first two games of the 2020 season, as he’s been suspended. Pennel’s apology is as sincere as they come, but it remains to be seen if the Chiefs are willing to accept it just weeks ahead of the regular season.

Will the Chiefs be able to sustain a hit to their defensive line?

Pennel wasn’t a big name in the NFL, but he sure became a stud in Kansas City. His hit on Jimmy Garoppolo in the Super Bowl was a game-changer, and a play that most definitely helped pave the way for the Kansas City Chiefs to win their first Super Bowl in 50 years. It also helped him land a second contract with the Chiefs, as he re-signed with them this offseason.

Pennel offered an apology to his family, friends, teammates, fans of the Chiefs and the organization itself for what transpired. He mentions that he’s unaware of how this happened and said he’d be more attentive to what he puts in his body in the future.

While two games is a big loss, this could have been worse. The Chiefs are already missing Bashaud Breeland for four games due to yet another suspension, so now they’ll be without two of their defensive pieces to start off a 2020 season where they hope to run it back and win a second straight Super Bowl.
