Oklahoma football is a hotbed for top-tier quarterback talent. They are the new QBU.

Oklahoma football is the place to be if you’re a top-tier quarterback. They have dominated the Heisman circuit in recent years. Baker Mayfield was a two-time finalist before winning in 2017, Kyler Murray made it two in a row when he took it home in 2018. And Jalen Hurts finished as the runner-up to Joe Burrow last year for the Heisman. For that recent string of success, Oklahoma is now officially QBU, according to ESPN’s David Hale who released his 2.0 version of Position U on Tuesday morning.

Oklahoma football beat out USC, Oregon, Louisville and Texas for the right to claim the QBU title.

Former five-star recruit Spencer Rattler hopes to continue that Heisman legacy when he takes over as the starter this season. Behind him, five-star commit Caleb Williams could be next.

Mayfield and Murray were both No. 1 picks and Hurts was taken early in the second round.

What has made Oklahoma so good at the quarterback position over the years is not only the talent of the quarterbacks to come through the program but the bright offensive mind of offensive coordinator-turned-head coach Lincoln Riley.

Riley knows and understands the level of quarterback talent he has and doesn’t speak about it inhouse with the team. The quarterbacks that come there know what the standard is for the position.

Will Oklahoma football win a national championship in the near future?

Oklahoma football’s offense has been stellar for the last few years the defense is not quite there yet but they are on their way.

In the 2021 recruiting class, the Sooners have 10 defensive commits including five defensive linemen. Oklahoma was No. 1 in the Big 12 in rushing defense and yards allowed. They finished top five in sacks and other major categories. In order for the Sooners to win a national championship, their defense has to rise to an elite level. They have to be consistent in stopping opposing offenses from scoring in high volume. That’s where it starts. The defense is fast, it flies around and it will be the deciding factor in whether the Sooners win the big one.

Riley continues to strike gold at the most important position on the football field. Oklahoma football is officially QBU and it should stay that way for years to come.
