Chicago Cubs star Anthony Rizzo is sick and tired of political agendas and doesn’t care if that bothers you.

When the Chicago Cubs took the field on Wednesday night, they did so without Jason Heyward.

Heyward’s absence was voluntary and seemed to be in solidarity with other players across North American sports who were striking to bring attention to the ongoing and seemingly endless social injustice occurring in their country.

The Milwaukee Bucks sat out Game 5 of their NBA Playoffs series against the Orlando Magic, which started a domino effect that saw all basketball games postponed and various other teams decide not to play. The Chicago Cubs were not among those teams, despite Heyward’s objections — although he reportedly insisted the team play on without him.

It was because of this that many were left wondering what exactly the Cubs would say after the game to address the fact they took the field when so many other teams sided with their teammates who were unwilling to.

Anthony Rizzo didn’t mince words when he took the mic.

“Shit doesn’t change,” Rizzo said, via The Athletic. “It’s just the fact of the matter. Politicians don’t really give a f— about us. All they care about is their own agenda. It’s just the way it is. It’s upsetting.”

Rizzo directly called out the Kenosha police officer who shot Jacob Blake seven times in the back, openly questioning the hubris so many white men in positions of authority feel when it comes to not being held accountable for their decisions.

“To shot a guy in the back like that doesn’t make any sense to me,” Rizzo said, while also doubling down to say he wondered why Blake didn’t listen to the officers giving him orders. “I’ll never understand.”

It’s notable that Rizzo would call out right-wing politicians given the people who sign his checks. The Ricketts, who own the Cubs, have been not-so-secretive about their support of Donald Trump and Trumpist ideology. They openly supported the nominations of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court despite the sexual abuse allegations brought against him, and have donated large sums to Trump’s campaign and to Republican political agendas that Rizzo called out.
