Justin Fields has a lot of good friends in Athens, and stopped by Georgia’s scrimmage to say hello

First and foremost, Justin Fields is not transferring back to Georgia, as far as we know. Fields remains determined to play out (what’s likely to be) his final season at Ohio State, and could very well get his wish with the coaches advocating for his cause. On Saturday, however, Fields had other matters to attend to.

Fields visited Georgia’s campus to catch up with some old friends, and take in the Bulldogs’ scrimmage. Per The Athletic’s Seth Emerson (subscription required), Fields watched as Jamie Newman tried to impress Kirby Smart enough to declare him the starter in Georgia’s season-opener against Arkansas. Thus far, Smart has remain noncommittal, and the emergence of USC transfer JT Daniels has only complicated matters.

Should we make anything of Fields’ visit to Athens?

Absolutely not. For Fields to put in so much effort in convincing the Big Ten to reverse its decision — and for the coaches to back up that talk — only for the future first-round pick to bolt for his former school would be ice cold, and not in his best interest. Fields’ eligibility would at the very least be in question, and he doesn’t need that sort of challenge going into his final college season.

Fields gains more from sitting out this season than by playing to begin with. Yet, the Buckeyes have as good of a chance as any to win the conference, and perhaps earn a Playoff berth should some sort of system be worked out. That holds weight, and leaving for Georgia makes next to no sense for him at this juncture.
