The Baltimore Orioles traded pitcher Mychal Givens to the Rockies.

The Colorado Rockies are the latest team to take advantage of the final day before the MLB trade deadline, picking up Mychal Givens from the Baltimore Orioles.

The trade was first reported by Jon Heyman of MLB Network before a slew of other baseball reporters confirmed the news.

In return for Givens, the Orioles are set to receive infield prospects Tyler Nevin and Terrin Vavra, plus another player to be named, according to Mark Feinsand of MLB Network.

Rockies: B

The Rockies are currently in a wild card spot, but they are fading. They started the 2020 campaign 11-3 but had dropped 13 of their last 19 games. The trade deadline is an opportunity for them to breathe new life into their campaign.

Givens, a six-year veteran, could walk into their bullpen and become a valuable and game-changing asset.

He has an outstanding ERA of 1.38 in 12 appearances for the Orioles this year as a reliever. His career ERA of 3.32 is better than any of the Rockies’ current bullpen.

The concern is, they’re leveraging future production for the here and now. It’s a risk, but perhaps one worth taking.

Orioles: A

The Orioles are in fourth place in the AL East, sitting below .500 on the season and five games out of the wild card. So their view ahead of the trade deadline had to be looking to the future.

They traded a veteran reliever for two of the Rockies promising prospects plus a player to be added later. The word “haul” deserves to be thrown around.

Nevin was rated as the Rockies’ 10th-best prospect while Vavra came in at 14th, per Dan Connolly of The Athletic.

The true value of the trade for Baltimore will have to be figured out down the line, but for now, it seems like a savvy move.
