Notre Dame Stadium has an ACC football logo and Grandpa is beyond furious

Grandpa can stop yelling at clouds and instead direct his attention to Notre Dame Stadium.

For the first time in his 80-something years, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish will play football in a conference. Though he usually sleeps through Notre Dame basketball games, he is semi-aware the Irish play in the ACC in all other sports. However, he gets up at 4:00 a.m. ET every fall Saturday to watch his beloved Golden Domers take the field. He’s going to be in for a rude awakening now.

Grandpa makes Thanksgiving awkward and Notre Dame football made it worse.

This man is a veteran who served his country. Though he claims to have fought in three wars, we all know he was a tank commander in Korea because he never shuts up about it at any family gathering. He claims to have been roommates with the “Golden Boy” Paul Hornung when they were in school, even though their time at Notre Dame didn’t overlap. “He’s not Paul Horner, Dad.”

When Grandpa sees the ACC logo painted on the Notre Dame Stadium turf, he’s going to pray seven Hail Marys to the ghost of Ara Parseghian and go with his tired cliche, “Brian Kelly is the worst thing to ever happen to Notre Dame” even though he is not. Grandpa refuses to accept the Charlie Weis years even happened. Can you blame him, though? He’s been through enough!

Politics aside, this is going to be the worst Thanksgiving ever. And you thought it was bad when your little brother went to Claire’s at the mall and got his left ear pierced. Grandpa refused to speak to you while begrudgingly attending your high school graduation because you abandoned the crewcut look for something a little more Randall “Pink” Floyd. Grandpa despises Aerosmith.

The worst part about all this is you and your brother did nothing wrong this year. You socially distanced. You maintained proper high-and-tight haircuts in a global pandemic. You didn’t complain about getting a salary reduction at work. You made Grandpa proud. He almost looked you in the eye and told you he loved you, but Korea emotionally hardened him 60 years ago.

All that good work you did this year was completely ruined by Notre Dame football joining the ACC.
