Oklahoma football player compares Spencer Rattler to Baker Mayfield
The hype train has left the station with Oklahoma football starting quarterback Spencer Rattler already eliciting comparisons to former Heisman winner Baker Mayfield.
If you’re an Oklahoma quarterback and getting compared to Baker Mayfield, you’re doing something right.
That’s the case for newly-minted Oklahoma football starting quarterback Spencer Rattler who is already getting comparisons to the former Sooners Heisman-winning quarterback.
Mayfield, who won the Heisman after back-to-back trips to New York as a finalist and led the Sooners to the College Football Playoff, has set the bar awfully high for Sooners quarterbacks coming after him. But Kyler Murray and Jalen Hurts have done a tremendous job of keeping the production and performance higher than any other college program.
Enter Rattler who was a heralded five-star recruit out of high school but say behind Hurts last year as he saw Hurts finish as the Heisman runner-up and lead the Sooners to another Big 12 title and another berth in the playoff.

Can he continue the Oklahoma football quarterback legacy?
Well, his teammates are loving what they’re seeing so far.
When asked about Rattler, Oklahoma H-back Brayden Willis, said, via Jason Kersey of The Athletic: “He’s a great leader and he’s done a great job getting us ready … You know, a little Baker Mayfield energy. It gets everybody hyped to play.”
That little quote will surely get the fan base pumped for the season and to see what Rattler can do as he continues his development. He’ll also be the first quarterback Lincoln Riley has for more than one season. The redshirt freshman has at least two more seasons before he’s eligible for the NFL Draft so you know the “quarterback whisperer” is excited to harness his potential and turn it into production.
Maybe he wins another Heisman Trophy for Oklahoma football. But they’ll take winning a national title over individual accolades all day.
