2020 Kentucky Derby preview, TV channel, live stream

The 2020 Kentucky Derby is taking place on a Saturday in September, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic in the United States

This year, the horse racing calendar was tremendously altered due to the presence of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States. Normally, the Kentucky Derby takes place in May as the kickstart for the Triple Crown. However, it was postponed until Sept. 5 as a safety precaution due to the spread of COVID-19 at the time. But the 146th Kentucky Derby is taking place this Saturday, albeit with no fans in attendance.

With the Kentucky Derby taking a four-month pause, the Belmont Stakes became the official first-leg of the Triple Crown in June. Normally, the Belmont is the second-leg of the Triple Crown, but as 2020 has proven, anything goes. The length of the race in Elmont, NY was shortened from the normal 1.5 miles to 1.125 miles due to training purposes for the three-year old horses participating in the event.

The length of the 146th Kentucky Derby will not be shortened like the Belmont Stakes and will be participated in the traditional 1.25 miles around the track.

The favorite entering Saturday’s race is Tiz the Law, a New York-based horse who won the Belmont Stakes, Travers Stakes and Florida Derby. Yet, the only race Tiz the Law lost was, ironically, at Churchill Downs last November. It will be interesting to see if the horse can exorcise its demons at Churchill Downs and pull itself closer to becoming the 14th Triple Crown winner.
