Nathan Peterman has a guaranteed job in 2020.

Nathan Peterman was given the chance to lead a contending Buffalo Bills team in 2017. He responded by throwing five interceptions in the first half of his first NFL start. That sent him right back to the bench.

He then earned the starting job in 2018, but looked so terrible he lasted just over one half again. Peterman was let go and has found a new home with the Las Vegas Raiders. He spent the 2019 season on injured reserve and clearly did enough before his injury to prove he belonged. Jon Gruden works in mysterious ways.

The Peterman belief train continues to roll on as he has now agreed to a guaranteed contract for the 2020 season. Remember, the Raiders already have Marcus Mariota as the backup behind Derek Carr.

Nathan Peterman’s contract has more guaranteed value than Cam Newton

Peterman now has more in guarantees than Cam Newton does this season. Let that sink in. Of course, Newton will earn more by playing each week and hitting incentives but the point remains insane.

Peterman has historically bad numbers and has thrown 12 interceptions in 130 career pass attempts. He has only three touchdowns in his eight career appearances and posted a 5.9 QBR in 2018. But for some reason, Gruden sees him as a key piece in his quarterback room.

The Raiders now have a combined cap hit over $30 million at the quarterback position and $10 million of that is for two guys who may not step on the field at all this season.

Peterman may have shown off some abilities in Raiders camp that fans have not yet seen. But this appears to be another example of someone who got their chance, failed, but continues to stick around for unknown reasons. Players like Newton and Jameis Winston may want to call their agents and ask why they are being paid like Peterman.
