Dwayne Haskins enters season as odds-on favorite to be first QB benched

Vegas thinks Dwayne Haskins might head to the bench soon.

The Washington Football Team isn’t expected to do much in 2020 due to their lack of depth on both sides of the ball, but uncertainty at quarterback might drive the nail in the coffin. Based on the latest odds, Vegas isn’t too confident in second-year gunslinger Dwayne Haskins’ ability to lead this team.

Sportsbetting.ag released odds on who the first quarterback to lose his starting job in 2020 will be, and Haskins topped the list at +150 odds. Given his performance as a rookie and Alex Smith returning to football, it’s not an absurd declaration.

Dwayne Haskins has a better team around him this year

Haskins did have a very poor start to life in the NFL, but throwing four touchdowns with no interceptions in his last six quarters of action has Washington thinking the 2019 No. 15 overall pick can get into a groove this season. Haskins needed to compete for the starting job, and he won it convincingly over Smith and former Carolina Panthers backup Kyle Allen. 

Gone are the archaic schemes of 2019 coaches Jay Gruden and Bill Callahan, and in steps Ron Rivera, who was one botched fourth-quarter away from a Super Bowl win in 2016. That structure along with the presence of Antonio Gibson at running back and Haskins’ college teammate Terry McLaurin at wide receiver should make things much easier for Haskins in his second pro campaign.

Haskins might not have a ton of tools around him right now, but it’s certainly an improvement over what he had last year. For all his faults, the arm talent is very much real, and Rivera might be able to unlock it in the same way he did with Cam Newton during their first season together.
