Maybe David Montgomery will play Week 1 for the Chicago Bears after all?

It sounds like David Montgomery feels pretty good about his chances to play Week 1.

Montgomery hurt his groin back on Aug. 26. When the injury occurred, Montgomery believed he tore something. Now he’s working his way back into the Chicago Bears‘ running back rotation. He told Stacy Dales of The NFL Network, “I didn’t do much in practice yesterday. Wanna be safe.” Does this indicate the Bears starting running back will return Week 1 vs. the Detroit Lions?

Additionally, Montgomery stressed he’s focused on being healthy for the long-haul and doesn’t want to risk coming back too soon and aggravating his ankle injury.

The Chicago Bears need David Montgomery to be healthy to win big in 2020.

As a rookie out of Iowa State University last season, Montgomery rushed for 889 yards on 242 carries for six touchdowns. He separated himself as the Bears’ starting running back over the change-of-pace back Tarik Cohen and the sparingly used Ryan Nall. Given the Bears’ issues at quarterback with Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles, Montgomery needs to be a bell-cow in 2020.

Chicago can win the NFC North this year, as the Bears should have a formidable defense once again. Though the rival Green Bay Packers went 13-3 last season, they were among the softest 13-3 teams of all time. While the Minnesota Vikings should be good, what is their ceiling with Kirk Cousins at quarterback? Though they’ll be better, the Lions are very much still the Lions.

Even if the game is on the road, Chicago should be able to take care of business vs. the Lions. The Bears have a massive head-coaching advantage with Matt Nagy over Matt Patricia. However, the Lions do have a former No. 1 overall pick returning from injury at quarterback in Matthew Stafford and the Bears can’t have their former No. 2 overall pick play like No. 2. Otherwise, it’s Foles’ team.

Montgomery may play some in Week 1, but he may need a week or so to get back to fully good.
