The DeAndre Hopkins trade could still prove incredibly dumb, but David Johnson is doing his best to prove us wrong

The Houston Texans traded DeAndre Hopkins, one of the best wide receivers in all of football, for oft-injured running back David Johnson and draft capital. It was a highly-criticized move at the time, and is unlikely to be proven right anytime soon. Yet, Johnson made Bill O’Brien look smart as quickly as humanly possible, as he scored the team’s first touchdown of the season against the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.

It’s easy to forget that Johnson had over 2,100 all-purpose yards in 2016. Then, the injury bug bit him early and often. With the back approaching his late-20’s, it’s fair for fans to assume that trading Houston’s best weapon for an aging running back is…suspect to say the least.

For what it’s worth, Johnson could be a valuable weapon for O’Brien and the Texans, especially as an every-down back out of the backfield. Johnson, when healthy, is among the best receiving backs in the game. Remaining on the field has been an issue, of course, but Houston is banking on at least a few more years of top productivity from the former Pro Bowler.

Perhaps we all jumped the gun on Johnson.

Next. Texans can pull off an upset over the Chiefs in Week 1 if these things happen. dark
