It’s hard to believe that the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs could improve

The Kansas City Chiefs have only played one game in the 2020 regular season, but it was a dominating victory over the Houston Texans (a playoff team from the 2019 season) and left everyone wondering just how in the heck this team got BETTER from their Super Bowl-winning team we saw on the field seven months ago.

The Chiefs didn’t lose much talent from their 2019 Super Bowl roster

Not only did the Chiefs not lose much talent this offseason, but they added really good players. Everyone saw firsthand just how elite first-round rookie Clyde Edwards-Helaire could be in the NFL and he now gives the Chiefs something they didn’t have last year, which is a dominant run game.

Running the ball wasn’t the Chiefs’ forte last year, as they finished the season in the bottom half of the league when it came to their rushing attack. Yet, that’s largely what the Chiefs relied on in Thursday’s game, as Patrick Mahomes only threw for 203 yards.

Having Edwards-Helaire in the backfield now means opponents have both Mahomes and his wide array of weapons to stop as well as a shifty running back who can evade tacklers like nobody’s business. The Texans couldn’t get off the field, and long drives wore the defense down immensely. Such a strategy is a weapon Andy Reid can use whenever necessary.

Kansas City also played well defensively despite not having their starting cornerback and losing their other starting corner near the back half of the game. They were smothering Deshaun Watson all night long, and if their defense plays this well all season long, they’ll be able to improve upon their impressive top-10 ranking from last year.

The Kansas City Chiefs were favorites to win the Super Bowl coming into the 2020 season because of what they accomplished in 2019, but now they’re looking like an even better unit than the one we watched hoist the Lombardi Trophy earlier this year.
