In another sign that 2020 is just going to be one of those years, Ben Hill Griffin Stadium was on fire on Saturday. Thankfully, there was no football game being played by the Florida Gators at the time.

Good thing the SEC delayed the start of the college football season until Sept. 26, because there could have been a real disaster if Florida was hosting a game today. A fire broke out at the home of the Florida Gators on Saturday afternoon. Gainesville Fire Rescue was called and put out the fire and more details are waiting to emerge as to the cause of the fire, where exactly the fire started and the extent of the damage.

Thankfully, it appears that any worst-case scenario was avoided.

Video of the fire and the smoke billowing out Ben Hill Griffin Stadium was captured and it’s another frightening look at how disastrous this could have been on a normal game day Saturday with 90,000 fans and spectators in and around the stadium.

According to Pete Thamel, a golf cart that caught on fire was the culprit and there was no structural damage. But according to Claudio Bellofatto, the GFD reported the fire was a literal dumpster fire that started on the third level.

And for one final update, Florida said the fire started from a maintenance tractor.

In any event, a big thank you goes out to the Gainesville Fire Department for the fast and swift response to arriving at the blaze and putting out the fire before any more serious damage could take place and before anyone was hurt.
