Gerald McCoy shares hilarious family story during Cowboys-Rams
Gerald McCoy’s son wants to know why the Cowboys are playing without him.
Some things are so sad they make you laugh. Case in point, the conversation Gerald McCoy probably had to have with his son on Sunday night.
The six-time Pro Bowler tweeted a hilariously sad anecdote at the start of the game between the Rams and Cowboys.
“My son just said, ‘heyyyy, wait a minute, why are they Cowboys playing without you?” McCoy said.
Three grimacing emojis added some flourish.
Gerald McCoy’s son didn’t realize his dad had been cut
McCoy was set to play for the Cowboys this year, having signed a three-year contract with the team in March.
Things appeared to be going well for the defensive tackle until the first day of padded practices during training camp in August. McCoy ruptured his quad, ending his season prematurely.
To add insult to injury, the Cowboys took advantage of a clause in his newly-signed contract which would allow them to cut him in case of an injury without having to pay him any more than his signing bonus.
Less than a month later, McCoy is sitting at home with his son, having to explain why he’s not playing n Sunday Night Football. Too soon?
On the plus side, indications are the Cowboys intend to resign McCoy next year, when he’s healthy and if it’s a viable option. There don’t appear to be hard feelings.
McCoy was the third overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He thrived in Florida, going to the Pro Bowl every year between 2012 and 2017. He signed a one-year contract with the Panthers in 2019 before moving on to the Cowboys.
Hopefully next year the younger McCoy won’t have to ask his dad such a painfully funny question.
