NFL: 4 quarterbacks who should be benched before next week
By John Buhler
This might make some in the Five Boroughs mad, but we’re absolutely going there. With the Jacksonville Jaguars getting an improbable first win of the season, aren’t the New York Jets the worst team in the NFL right now? I know they only lost by 10 points to the Buffalo Bills, but the Bills always play low-scoring games, given their defensive-minded nature as a football team.
While he wasn’t seeing ghosts again, more and more people are selling their Sam Darnold stock. He is inherently reckless with the football and looks to be as raw of a bucking bronco as he did coming out of USC back in 2018. Though he could have been the No. 1 overall pick, he may be the fourth-best quarterback taken in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, ahead of only Josh Rosen.
Darnold completed 21-of-35 passes for 215 yards, a touchdown and a god awful interception. He was sacked three times and averaged 6.1 yards per attempt. Even though his counterpart Josh Allen lost two fumbles, he simply outplayed his draft class buddy in yet another head-to-head meeting. This shows us where you end up means absolutely and unequivocally everything.
Let’s be real. We’re running out of time before we can start saying Darnold is a bust. If he was the savior for Gang Green, we’d see flashes of it already. Instead, he’s seeing ghosts, contracting mononucleosis and still throwing footballs across his body like he’s playing Pac-12 cannon fodder. As it turns out, your awful Jets are AFC East cannon fodder. We might even see Joe Flacco in 2020.
