Tottenham do have an interest in bringing Gareth Bale back to England, but Spurs are more interested in a swoop for Andrea Belotti at the moment.

Gareth Bale returning to Tottenham would be a signing to thrill Spurs fans around the globe. That doesn’t mean it’s Daniel Levy’s top priority at the moment. The Welsh international is an intriguing transfer target for the club, but Andrea Belotti is a higher priority at the moment.

According to Gianluca di Marzio, Tottenham have returned to Torino with an improved bid for the Italian international. The original offer from Spurs was a loan with an obligation to buy that had the potential to top £50 million. The Serie A club’s initial response was that they’d only consider parting with their striker on a conventional, big-money deal.

Bale is a potential romantic deal for Spurs while inking Belotti would be both exciting and pragmatic. The club’s need to acquire a striker to provide cover for Harry Kane is obvious. Belotti has the potential to play with Kane against certain opponents while also leading the Tottenham line in the English talisman’s absence.

That’s why Belotti is the club’s unquestioned top target at the moment. The obvious question is whether or not Levy is willing to sanction a bid large enough to convince Torino to make a deal. Belotti was arguably the only reason they were able to survive in Serie A last season. They aren’t going to give their most valuable asset up for anything less than a premium transfer fee.

That makes it unlikely that Spurs can come to an agreement for Belotti this summer. He appears to be a striker that will remain firmly out of Tottenham’s price range for the foreseeable future. Belotti is the ideal solution for Jose Mourinho’s attacking issues, but this is the wrong summer to complete a deal of this magnitude.
