U.S. Open sleeper No. 1: Matthew Wolff (+8000)

The winner at the 3M Open last year, a victory that earned him his PGA Tour card, 21-year-old Matthew Wolff has the talent to win quite literally any time that he’s on a golf course. The question is always which version of the young Oklahoma State product is going to show up in a given week. That is to say that Wolff has been a bit inconsistent throughout his pro career.

His showings over the past few months show exactly that. Wolff finished second at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, missed the cut the following week, then went T22 at the Memorial and T12 at the 3M Open before dropping outside the top 45 the next week. But then he rebounded from that to finish tied for fourth at the PGA Championship. Again, he’s a little all over the map.

While that may be true, sometimes being all over the map lands Wolff in contention in big-time events. It’s been clear throughout this past season, his first “full” one as a professional, that he’s matured as a player, which helps him to pop up in big events with loaded fields. Now it’s about capitalizing on that.

We’ve already seen a fellow 2019 rookie, Collin Morikawa, win a major championship and now he’s among the top-10 favorites to win the 2020 U.S. Open. Frankly, this could be one of the last times that you’re going to be able to get Matthew Wolff at this price. He has the complete package to compete on the biggest stages and perhaps surviving and winning at Winged Foot is his coming-out party.
