Being able to vote is not comparable to attending a Georgia football game.

University of Georgia students can’t vote at Tate Center because of social distancing protocol.

The University of Georgia tweeted out a response as to why they aren’t allowing the Tate Center to be a voting precinct in the upcoming Presidential Election. Though fans can attend Georgia football games this fall, the university has come under scrutiny in what looks to be an attempt to suppress the vote. Other voting precincts will be open, just not the Tate Center for the 2020 Election.

Do you think they’ll let students onto the Sanford Stadium turf to vote?

If you think the university will allow students to walk onto Vince Dooley field to cast a ballot, you’ve got another thing coming. Not only is that field sacred, as you will get arrested if you go onto it, but it rains all the time in November in Northeast Georgia. If the university wants to make this right, it should open up Stegeman Coliseum, where the hoops and gymnastics teams play.

There’s a lot of room there to socially distance and still cast a ballot. As an alum of the University of Georgia, when I think of the Tate Center, I never think about casting a ballot there. I think about ordering Chick-fil-A and Barberitos while I wait for my next business class I’m sure to get a B, C, or D in. Unless you want to hit up Tate Theatre or upstairs in Tate 2 or something, where’s the room?

While it’s great for 18-to-23-year-olds to rock the vote, if you really want to make serious changes in the Peach State, cast an absentee ballot or make the hour-and-half trek home to Cobb County, North Fulton or Gwinnett. If you win the northeastern suburbs of Atlanta, you can pretty much win any election in Georgia. Most of the student body at UGA hails from those counties anyway.

If Georgia wants to make this right, how about not holding class on election or opening up the Steg?
